Getting to & Around Andaman

Where Are the Andamans?

In the Heart of the Bay of Bengal

The Andaman Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, around 1,200 km east of mainland India — closer to Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia than to Chennai.

Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram), the capital, is the only main entry point and the home port of Bite Me Charter. Every trip — day charter or expedition — starts here.

By Sea

Passenger Ships From the Mainland

Government passenger ships sail to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam. The voyage takes around 3 days (60 – 70 hours) and sailings are infrequent, so most anglers fly.

Tickets are sold through the Directorate of Shipping Services, Andaman & Nicobar Administration. Schedules are irregular — confirm well before travelling.

Practical Tips for Anglers

Rods & Tackle

Airlines treat rod tubes as sports equipment. Check your airline's checked-baggage allowance (domestic economy is often 15 kg) and pre-book extra baggage online — it is cheaper than paying at the airport. All tackle is provided by Bite Me Charter if you prefer to travel light.

Permits & ID

Indian nationals need only a valid photo ID. Foreign nationals need a valid Indian visa (e-Visa accepted) and their passport on arrival. Some restricted islands require additional permits — we handle all fishing-related permissions. See our Travel Requirements page for details.

Money

ATMs and card payments are widely available in Port Blair. Carry some cash for remote islands, where ATMs are limited or unavailable.

Phone & Internet

Mobile coverage (Airtel, Jio, BSNL) works well in Port Blair. Coverage is limited or absent on remote islands and offshore fishing grounds.
