Dogtooth Tuna Fishing in Andaman: Jigging the Deep Walls

Bite Me Crew7 August 20261 min readBarren Island

How to target dogtooth tuna in the Andaman Islands with heavy jigging on deep walls and pinnacles.

The dogtooth tuna is a reef-dwelling tuna with a mouth full of teeth and a reputation for breaking tackle. In the Andaman Islands, deep walls and pinnacles provide perfect habitat.

Where Dogtooth Live

Unlike most tuna, dogtooth stay close to structure — steep drop-offs, pinnacles and volcanic ledges. Barren Island, the Invisible Bank and deep edges around South Andaman are prime areas.

Technique

Heavy vertical jigging is the main approach. Drop a long jig to the depth where fish are marked on the sounder, then work it back fast. Strikes often come in the first few metres off the bottom, and the fish immediately dives back towards the reef.

Tackle

Jigging rods rated PE5 to PE8, high-drag reels, PE6 to PE8 braid, 130 to 200 lb leaders and jigs from 200 to 400 g depending on depth and current.

The Fight

Dogtooth fights are short, brutal and decided early. Keep the drag heavy and the rod working to lift the fish away from the structure.

Season

Dogtooth can be caught throughout the season from October to May, with remote expeditions planned around settled weather windows.
