Everything you need to know about fishing in the Andaman Islands — species, seasons, techniques, boats and how to plan your trip.
Fishing in Andaman is unlike anywhere else in India. Over 570 islands sit in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal, surrounded by coral reefs, deep drop-offs, current-swept channels and offshore banks that see very little fishing pressure. For sport anglers, this is the country's last true frontier.
Why the Andaman Islands Are Special
The islands rise steeply from deep water, so productive fishing grounds are often within a short run of the coast. Strong tides push bait along reef edges and points, and that bait draws in powerful predators — Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel, groupers and snappers.
Main Fishing Techniques
The most popular technique is GT popping — casting big surface lures to reef edges. Vertical jigging over pinnacles and drop-offs produces dogtooth tuna, amberjack and groupers. Trolling covers open water for wahoo, tuna and sailfish, while light tackle and micro-jigging keep the action going on shallow reefs.
When to Go
The Andaman fishing season generally runs from October to May. The months either side of the monsoon can be excellent, but weather, sea state, tide and bait matter more than the calendar. We assess conditions before every trip.
Where to Fish
Popular grounds include Rutland Island and the Cinque Islands south of Port Blair, the Ritchie's Archipelago around Havelock and Neil, and remote destinations such as Little Andaman, Barren Island, the Invisible Bank and North Andaman.
Catch and Release
We promote responsible sportfishing. Sportfish are handled carefully and released wherever appropriate, so these waters stay world class for the next generation.
