Reef edges, current lines and low fishing pressure make the Andaman Islands a true GT fishing paradise.
Ask any serious popping angler about the Andaman Islands and the answer is the same: GT. The Giant Trevally is the apex predator of these reefs, and the Andamans offer some of the best GT fishing in the Indian Ocean.
The Fish
Giant Trevally are built for violence — broad, muscular and armed with incredible acceleration. They hunt along reef edges, channels and drop-offs, ambushing bait pushed by the tide. When a GT hits a popper, the strike is visual and explosive.
Why Andaman
Low fishing pressure, healthy reefs and strong tidal flow create perfect GT habitat. Rutland Island, the Cinque Islands, Little Andaman and remote offshore banks all offer excellent structure for popping.
How We Fish for GT
We cast large poppers and stickbaits to the edge of the reef and work them back with hard rod sweeps. The first run decides the fight — anglers must stop the fish before it reaches the coral. Heavy tackle and locked drag are essential.
Tackle Checklist
A PE8 to PE10 popping rod, a 14000 to 20000 size spinning reel, PE8 braid, a 170 to 220 lb mono leader and a selection of 120 to 200 g poppers and stickbaits. Full tackle is available onboard.
Respecting the GT
Every GT we catch is handled carefully and released. These fish are too valuable to keep, and releasing them protects the future of Andaman sportfishing.
