Master GT popping in Andaman with these casting, retrieve and fighting techniques from our crew.
GT popping is the signature fishing experience of the Andaman Islands. It is physical, visual and addictive. Here are the techniques that make the difference.
Long, Accurate Casts
GT often sit right on the reef edge. A long cast that lands close to structure gives the lure maximum time in the strike zone.
The Retrieve
Drive the rod down and across to make the popper throw a big splash, then pause and wind the slack. Vary the rhythm until the fish respond.
Stickbaits
When GT will not rise to poppers, switch to stickbaits that swim just under the surface. A slow, sweeping action often triggers wary fish.
Strike and Hold
When a GT eats, do not strike too early. Wait for the weight, then strike hard twice. The first run is critical — keep the rod low and the drag locked.
Body Position
Use your body, not just your arms. A good harness or belt helps you fight big fish safely.
Practice Before You Travel
Casting heavy poppers all day is demanding. Practise at home to build stamina and accuracy.
