A guide to jigging in the Andaman Islands — from heavy vertical jigging for dogtooth to light micro-jigging on the reefs.
Jigging is one of the most productive ways to fish the Andaman Islands. With deep structure close to many islands, there is always somewhere to drop a jig.
Vertical Jigging
Heavy jigs worked fast through the water column target dogtooth tuna, amberjack and GT holding on pinnacles and walls.
Slow-Pitch Jigging
A more subtle technique using flat, fluttering jigs. Excellent for groupers, snappers, jobfish and tuna that will not chase a fast jig.
Micro Jigging
Light jigs of 20 to 60 g on light tackle produce constant action on reefs around Neil, Havelock and Port Blair.
Tackle Basics
Match the jig weight to depth and current. Use assist hooks rather than trebles, and fluorocarbon leaders for clear water.
Reading the Sounder
Our Garmin electronics show bait and fish below the boat, letting us drop exactly where fish are holding.
