How, where and when to target yellowfin tuna in the Andaman Islands — from surface feeding frenzies to deep jigging.
Yellowfin tuna are one of the most exciting targets in the Andaman Sea. Fast, powerful and beautiful, they test both angler and tackle — and they are excellent eating when a fish is kept responsibly.
Where Yellowfin Are Found
Yellowfin roam open blue water and gather where currents push bait against islands, banks and drop-offs. Offshore grounds such as the Invisible Bank, the waters around Barren Island and deep edges in South Andaman can all hold tuna when conditions line up.
Reading the Signs
Diving seabirds, jumping bait and boiling water are the classic signs of feeding tuna. Our crew watches the horizon constantly and uses modern Garmin electronics to find bait and fish below the surface.
Techniques That Work
When tuna are on the surface, casting stickbaits and metal lures into the frenzy produces explosive strikes. When they hold deeper, vertical and slow-pitch jigging is effective. Trolling skirted lures and diving plugs also covers water while searching.
Recommended Tackle
A spinning setup rated PE4 to PE6, a quality reel with a smooth drag of 8 kg or more, and a fluorocarbon leader of 60 to 100 lb are a good starting point. All tackle is supplied onboard.
Best Time
Tuna activity varies through the season from October to May and depends on bait, current and water temperature. Ask us about recent activity before you book.
