Conservation & Catch and Release Fishing in Andaman
Healthy reefs and big fish are the reason anglers travel to the Andaman Islands. At Bite Me Charter we practise responsible sport fishing and catch and release, so the GT, dogtooth tuna and billfish that make these waters world class are still here for the next generation.
Why Conservation Matters in the Andaman Sea
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold some of the healthiest coral reefs and least-pressured fish populations in the Indian Ocean. Apex predators such as Giant Trevally and dogtooth tuna grow slowly, live long and play a vital role in keeping reef ecosystems balanced. Removing too many of them changes the whole reef. Sustainable sport fishing protects both the fishery and the tourism it supports for local communities.
Catch and Release Fishing
All Giant Trevally (GT), billfish such as sailfish and marlin, and large dogtooth tuna are released. We fight fish efficiently on the right tackle, unhook them quickly and release them in good condition. Catch and release in Andaman means you can enjoy the fight of a lifetime while the fish returns to the reef to spawn and be caught again.
Responsible Fish Handling
Good handling is the difference between a fish that survives and one that does not. We keep fish in the water whenever possible, support the belly and never hang a heavy GT by the jaw, keep air time to a few seconds for photos, use wet hands or gloves and revive every fish facing into the current before letting it go. Our crew will show you exactly how.
Conservation-Friendly Tackle
We use single inline hooks on many lures and jigs, flatten barbs where suitable and choose line and leader strong enough to land fish quickly. Shorter fights mean less exhaustion and a much higher survival rate after release.
Sustainable Harvest
There is no commercial-style harvest on our boats. We do not kill sportfish for trophies. A small number of plentiful table species may be kept occasionally for a meal, always within local rules and never protected or breeding species.
Protecting Reefs and Marine Life
We avoid anchoring on live coral, respect marine protected areas and national park boundaries, take all waste back to shore and never dump plastic or line at sea. We give space to turtles, dolphins, dugongs and seabirds we meet on the water.
Respecting Local Rules and Communities
Fishing in the Andaman Islands is regulated by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and the Department of Fisheries. We follow permit requirements, seasonal restrictions and restricted-area rules, and we work with local crew and communities who depend on a healthy sea.
How You Can Help
Follow your skipper's instructions when landing and releasing fish, keep photos quick, choose release over keeping and share your catch-and-release stories. Every angler who fishes responsibly helps protect the future of Andaman sport fishing.
